Description: Experienced and qualified Principal / Senior Materials Engineer with exposure to metallic based materials required for global manufacturer.

Our client specialise in the design and manufacture of a range of special purpose products for supply to the global defence sector, and as a result of continued success and an ongoing programme of planned strategic growth, they are now seeking to recruit experienced, dynamic and self motivated Principal Materials Engineers (Metallurgy) to complement their established and highly successful team.
Working as part of the Materials and Processes team, you will be responsible for providing Materials expertise in the selection and utilisation of metallic based Materials, Technologies and related Processes, covering R&D, concept phase, detailed design phase, testing and validation, manufacture, in service support, and finally disposal aspects. With a cost conscious eye for detail you will guide both technical and non-technical areas of the business in the use of metallic materials including aiding in the selection of suppliers and subcontractors.
Successful candidates will be responsible for the definition of an international strategy, preparing and maintaining M&P Specifications and Procedures ensuring compliance with statutory, regulatory and corporate requirements within area(s) of specialism and keeping abreast of changes which may impact the business. You will carry out technical analyses and investigations (independently or through leadership of a multi-skilled project team) of complex problems, issues and opportunities to provide conclusions and implications, and will provide technical support to Design and Project Peer Reviews as well as to Commodities and Procurement in the assessment of sub-contractors, suppliers and other external agencies.
You will underwrite appraisal of Project Materials Lists within M&P and recommend solutions to avoid obsolescence, minimize proliferation and ensure performance to Product Requirements, and will plan, control and deliver assigned projects, work packages and collaborative research programmes, ensuring requirements are delivered within the agreed quality, time and cost. You will also be tasked with providing technical leadership for the M&P group and developing the skills and capabilities of others in specialised domain (metallic) whilst acting as the main point of contact with customers (internal and external) and/or suppliers and collaborators in specialised domain (metallic) on Materials engineering matters, to resolve a full range of problems and issues and to maintain awareness in both parties of priorities and objectives. Where appropriate you will support the identification of business opportunities and the preparation of bids, and manage assigned budgets and lead, develop and motivate assigned staff to ensure they are aware of and capable of delivering their accountabilities.
To be considered for this varied and challenging role, you will ideally be degree qualified or equivalent with demonstrable experience of working in a materials environment within the manufacturing or defence sector. You will possess strong experience in selection, processing, and specification of metallic materials including some aspects of welding, brazing, heat-treatment, surface treatments, corrosion science, tribology etc and will be a problem solver with good verbal, written and presentational skills able to work autonomously or as part of a team. Flexibility to travel internationally is essential for the role.
