Our client can demonstrate almost half a century’s expertise in the design, development and manufacture of bespoke automation and robotic systems, and are regarded by many in the industry as one of the leading automation system solution providers in the whole of the UK. As a result of continued success and a planned programme of strategic growth, they are now seeking to recruit an experienced Mechanical Design Engineer to design and oversee special purpose machine projects from order through to handover.

Tasked with undertaking the design and detailing of projects using 3D CAD (SolidEdge, SolidWorks, Inventor or Creo preferred), you will work as part of a team committed to delivering projects both on time and within budget - liaising extensively with fellow project team members and managers, suppliers and customers themselves, so excellent communication skills are a prerequisite for the position.

Responsible for attending sales hand over meetings and committing to overall project plans, you will arrange periodic design reviews to ensure the designs meet customer requirements as well as meeting assembly, robustness and reliability needs, visiting customer sites where necessary to understand and document requirements and obtaining Design Pass Off by the customer. You will design BOM’s are produced and will negotiate with external suppliers to obtain the most cost-effective materials.

Other duties will include assisting in the electrical design process by communicating clearly and effectively through the duration of the project and especially through the mechanical design phase, and compiling build folders and communicating build details to machine tool fitters to ensure an efficient build process. You will be involved in performing trials as early as possible to the project plan and obtain all the parts and samples and drawings necessary well in advance to ensure these can be checked and used through the design phase. You will also check the quality of parts on receipt to ensure they comply with drawings and quality of finish and will pro-actively address and provide solutions to problems identified during development - whether of an electrical or mechanical nature – and will construct and maintain a comprehensive Technical Construction File (TCF) which includes manuals, risk assessments, mechanical parts list and drawings.

To be considered for this varied and hands on challenging role you will essentially demonstrate at least 5 years previous experience of mechanical design allied to robotics, automation, mechanical mechanisms and pneumatic systems, and will realistically be at least HND or equivalent qualified in a relevant Mechanical Engineering discipline. You will be an expert user of 3D parametric CAD packages, ideally Solid-edge however use of Solid-works, Inventor, Creo etc would also be considered and demonstrate a proven track record of successfully delivering mechanical design projects to required timescale and budgetary constraints. Knowledge and understanding of the various national and international standards for machine design and machine safety systems and requirements to CE mark machine systems is essential, as is the flexibility to travel to customer sites within the UK and overseas where necessary.
